Paving Where County Roads Are Just Getting Paved
Paving contractors in Carr work in a place where paving is still new. Carr is an unincorporated community in northern Weld County at about 5,712 feet, close to the Wyoming line, with a turnoff on I-25. County Road 21 (2nd Street) was paved around 2022 from County Road 126 to County Road 124, making it the community's first paved north-south road. Most driveways and side roads are still gravel.
Railroad roots
The Union Pacific established Carr in 1872 and named it for Robert E. Carr, who managed construction of the rail line through town. The post office opened in 1872 and closed around 2021. Old Colorado State Highway 5 ran through town from 1920 to 1939. Some once considered Carr a ghost town, but a growing number of year-round residents has changed that.
Cold valley air
Carr sits in the Lone Tree Creek valley, which is large enough for winter temperature inversions, when cold air settles in the valley overnight. That means colder nights and more freeze-thaw cycles than nearby high ground. Pavement here needs a dry base and sealed cracks to cope.
Gravel to pavement
For owners moving from gravel, a common plan is a hot-mix apron and turnaround near the house and a compacted recycled asphalt run to the road. Angi lists millings at $3 to $8 per square foot installed; HomeGuide lists hot-mix driveways at $5 to $12 or more. Where the paved section meets gravel, we taper and support the edge.
Weld County access
New or changed accesses onto Weld County roads require a county access permit through the E-Permit Center with four site photos. If a paved access will meet a paved road, such as County Road 21, a right-of-way permit with insurance and a traffic control plan may be needed.
Natural landmark
The Carr Natural Fort, a limestone formation, lies just north of the I-25 turnoff.
Scheduling
Carr is about 20 miles south of Cheyenne. Travel is included in the estimate.
